Introduction
About this Recipe
Marijuana (Cannabis sativa) grows wild all around India. We see it all the time while walking through village alleyways and farmland paths. This wild stuff is what gets harvested, dried and sold here in Sri Braja Mandala. We call it Desi Buds, “desi” mean country, as in countryside, villager, rural.
Is weed legal in India?
Officially, no. All narcotics in India are illegal.
However, followers of the Hindu god Shiva believe smoking marijuana is a way of worshipping the god. In dear old Hindustan, that’s pretty much all you need to justify smoking weed. (“The Stoner’s Guide to Weed in India” a fun and informative blog, if you’re interested!)

IndiOdyssey Sadhu Chai
Equipment
- 1 Sauce Pan
- 1 Coffee grinder Or similar food grinding
Ingredients
- 1½ grams Marijuana We used desi buds; know your own strength
- 2 tsp Ghee Or oil/butter of your choosing
- 1 cup Water
- 2 tsp Chai Masala Mix
- 1 cup Milk Whole milk tastes best!
- 1 tsp Black tea
- 1 tbsp Dhaga mishri Or sweetener of your choice
Instructions
- Grind up the marijuana into course powder.
- Heat the ghee in a sauce pan; add the ground marijuana and mix well. Add the water and bring to a simmer and simmer for 30 minutes. This step, this 30 minutes, is critical for decarboxylation of the marijuana and that sadhu sip!
- Add the dhaga mishri, black tea and milk, mix well and bring to a simmer for a few minutes. Keep an eye on the sauce pan so it doesn't boil over.
- Remove from heat and strain into cups. Enjoy!
