Chapatis versus Basmati Rice
Although chapatis are a staple in almost every Indian meal, I don’t make them, and instead prefer to make Basmati rice. Which by the way, I don’t eat either! I prefer to keep carbohydrates as low as possible and one way for me to do that is to omit the rice. I do make it for my son, Devin (a vata dosha)
- It’s time consuming & time sensitive; and labor intensive! The flour must be kneaded and left to rest for a bit, then rolled and cooked and finally finished over an open flame. And they are best served immediately and hot.
- You’ll be stuck in the kitchen making chapatis while everyone else is eating. Well, at least that is my experience. People eat A LOT of chapatis. (They are REALLY GOOD!)
- Both Basmati rice and chapatis made with fresh ground grains are highly regarded in Ayurveda and consider sattvic. So from that stand point they are equal.
- I personally prefer, if I am going to eat a major carbohydrate, that it be as close to the way nature made it as possible. That puts rice over chapati.
