It’s been a week since the last time I was out vegetable shopping and found the vegetable and fruit markets open.
Last Monday morning, April 27, 2020, when I stepped out to go shopping at the appointed shopping hours, I knew something was different. None of the vegetable stalls were open. Walking further down the road, my favorite “daily needs” bodega was shuttered.
Above, my local vegetable market was closed down tight. Nobody in sight.
May 4, 2020, the first day of our third consecutive 21-day lockdown in India, as mandated by Prime Minister Modi. I’m getting most of my information on Twitter – I have no idea how the average Indian is getting his or her information regarding lockdowns and closures.
It was on Twitter that I learned Vrindavan is in a “Red Zone”, other zones we could have been in are “Green Zone” and “Yellow Zone”. I only imagine what the zone colors mean…
The above video I took this morning as I was out and about to see if anything was open. Nothing was. According to Twitter, everything should be open in the “Red Zones” except auto-rickshaws and tuk-tuks. “Green Zones” & “Yellow Zones” also had the bonus of liquor stores and paan shops being opened. I had no idea they were closed (because there are none in Vrindavan!) But a drink would be nice – looking forward to a quiet little “happy hour” when this is all said and done.
